WHY IT'S A MUST TO OWN A CAR IN SINGAPORE!!!

For the past 6 weeks, I've had the privilege of "owning" a car.

You see, my dad had been in Thailand for the past 6 weeks so he gave me this privilege.  In return I'd have to take care of it - you know, make sure it's clean and functioning and stuff.

So basically, I was able to drive wherever and whenever I wanted to.

It...  Was...  Awesome!!!
I'm the king of the woooorld!

But alas, today marks the end of the 6 weeks and I have realised that it is truly great to have your own car.

So, I've come up with some reasons as to why you should own a car in Singapore.  ;)

1.  It's so dayuuum cheap.
(Please excuse me if I get some facts and figures wrong because I'm no car expert.)

It's really darn cheap, I mean, just look at the COE prices.  (onemotoring.com.sg)

A car (1600cc and below), has a COE price of approximately $78,000!  I mean, dude, who can't afford that?

And for bigger cars (1600cc and above), I mean, it's only slightly more expensive? But still cheap all the same - the COE prices are what, only about $82,000?  Sheesh, talk about cheap!

The cheapest car in Singapore (according to AsiaOne) would be the:
Perodua Kenari EZ 1.0 (A) 5dr.

(Have you even heard of it?)
And this baby, this hot ride, costs ONLY $60,999.

We could probably get a BMW 5 series for about US$50,000 in America, but I mean, who cares about that when we could be driving this sexy thang right?

2. Parking/Driving is waaaay cheap too!

Did you know that parking at any ol' "coupon car park" is super cheap?

It's like, $0.50 per half hour, and $1.00 per hour!  Unless you park at those yellow lots, then it's $1.00 per half hour.

And think about it, if you have long hours spent there, for example, maybe 5 hours, it'd be $5.00 only!  And if you had to park there everyday cause of school/work (no one's work hours would only accumulate up to 5 hours), it'd be $25 a week!  HOW CHEAP RIGHT??

When you run out of 1 hour/2 hour coupons, you suffer by peeling tons of half hour coupons.  :/
And nowadays, it's even better!  We no longer need to keep picking and picking at those parking coupons, instead, gantries will be placed everywhere!

You know, parking around town costs about $7 for 2 hours.  Crazy cheap, I know.

Every time I see my cash card's amount dwindle, I feel all happy inside.

Also, have you heard of ERP?  I'm sure you have.  Cause ERP is everywhere!

When you get lost in town, it's the BEST.  Because everywhere, there are ERP gantries, and when you're driving in rounds to find your way to your destination, you'll keep hearing the "TEET" of the cash card machine.  And each time you hear that "TEET", you'll know that at least a dollar will be taken off your cash card. So in just 5 minutes, you may pay $5.00! Amazing isn't it?

And if you somehow happen to forget to put your cash card in?  Don't worry about it!  The LTA is SO gracious!  No warning letter of such, they'll just make you pay a measly $11!  So sweet of them right??

Not to mention petrol, petrol is so cheap too.  I get the normal one, the N95 petrol from Caltex, and it's just about $80.00 per full tank!  Imagine, for a week or so of petrol usage, it only costs $80.00!  WOW.

Sadly, I don't know much about car maintenance.  But I'm pretty sure it's real cheap too!  I remember  we had to exchange the exterior of 2 of our car doors, and it only cost about $1000.00.  Nothing anyone couldn't afford!

3. Traffic jams are THE BEST.

CTE, PIE, Serangoon Road, you name it, they've got it!

They've got traffic jam during peak hour!

Which is really awesome, I mean, your car would just be at a standstill for a few seconds or more, and each time you're able to move, you just move a few inches!

Plus you'll get to meet all the friendly, gracious drivers out there who will honk at you ever so sweetly when you're trying to filter and maybe even make darling hand gestures at you if they are reeeeaally lovely!  Too bad you can't hear what they're saying across the road, cause I'm SURE they'll be yelling some really kind words to you too!

Sometimes peak hour jams aren't that fun because they clear up pretty easily.  The most "shiok" traffic jams are when there are car accidents or when they just choose to do road works/cut trees when there is heavy traffic to begin with!  The queue of cars never clears up! It's just awesome!

4. Singapore is HUGE.

Let's face it.  Singapore is HUMONGOUS.

There is no way anyone could survive without a car!  I mean, there is barely any public transport!  What are MRTs, buses, or Taxis even??

I always thought those people that owned Ferraris, Maseratis, and Lamborghinis were super smart because there is simply so much space to speed around and rev their engines about!  I mean, there are barely any traffic lights here cause there are numerous long highways for speeding!

So yeah, I think you catch my drift, it is totally worth it to buy a car in Singapore!
I mean, it's completely necessary, and not at all a waste of money - it's so cheap!!

Okay okay, I'm sure you could, or at least I hope you could tell I was being sarcastic!

Truly, these 6 weeks have taught me that owning a car in Singapore is NO JOKE.

The car costs a bomb, insurance and maintenance of the car costs a bomb, and parking and ERPs fees cause the explosion.  It's insane.  You have to remember that while paying for all these things, in the future, you'd probably be paying for other expenses such as your house and utilities.

Maybe it's cause I'm not rich.  Maybe it's cause I haven't started working so I don't see how possible or necessary it is to own a car.

But I can't help but think that Singapore is tiny small and has such an established network of public transport.  Is owning a car really necessary?

Not to mention, the LTA is crazy strict with fines regarding parking and ERP's.  They're vicious.  Haha!

And I could buy a way better car if I were overseas, how sad is that?  :(

Plus, even if I were filthy rich, would I be able to handle dealing with traffic jams everywhere?  (It's a real waste of time and petrol you know.)

I guess all in all I'm very thankful that my dad gave me such a privilege - to own my own car for 6 weeks.  And these 6 weeks opened my eyes to the "vehicle/traffic situation" in Singapore and taught me a valuable lesson.

I guess for now I'm content with what I have.  :)

  6. You ought to factor in petrol, road tax, car insurance, annual car servicing/ checking package at workshop + additional charges on top of these car servicing such as engine air filter change, air-con filter change, brake pad disc change, transmission oil change...etc.

COE is only a 10-year piece of paper.

The car is taxed at 100% by Singapore Customs. E.g. If the car is priced at stock-value of $25,000 in Japan, you need to pay at least $50,000 to import the car and in order to use in Singapore.

  12. I thought you were some crazy girl until I read on. Haha. Its indeed costly to own a car in Singapore especially for a brand new one. For a second hand one, it may still be affordable. All in all without factoring the car price, monthly cost for a car (including patrol, parking, ERP) should work out to be about $550-$600 per month.

Nice to chance upon your blog. Check out my blog too: http://sgyounginvestment.blogspot.com.

    1. $550-600 per month?! either you dont own a car, or you drive yours once a week. solely the petrol for each of my cars come up to that range each month. its closer to 1k per month than $600.

  14. Alternatively you could work hard and earn 10k every month and you can still own a car. :)

  17. & people don't fancy public transportations that much due to the everlasting congestion that ain't the slightest bit, better than the roads. In fact, vehicular jams in your own comfortable, private space is more pleasurable in every possible way.
Price hikes in public transports on top of their constant inconsistencies also caused commuters to lose faith.

    1. There are other ways to reduce the number of cars on the road. This COE system is just extorting money from everyone. Only the rich can afford.

So if a rich person buys 10 cars, what about those who actually needs a car? Is that fair? Why can't they have this system where COE is abolished and Singaporeans have to fill up an application to state why do they need a car. Based on their family size and finance, then they are allowed to buy a car. But no, they don't do this. Why? They are all money suckers.

Besides, the high COE prices are just forcing more Singaporeans to take the MRT and buses which is already so crowded.

      Delete
    2. You my friend,Have earned yourself a "like". I couldn't agree more with you. The Govt we have now consists of people who are not only rigid, but also ridiculously short sighted. The "solutions" that they came up with are only meant to "plug the gap". The problem will still be there. You cant expect the problem to go away by itself simply by ignoring it. You have to think of a long term solution. In this case, even if the COE were to be raised to a whopping 100k, the rich will still be able to afford more then 1 car,the poor will just have to either give up and sell their car and take our problem ridden/cost wont stop rising public transport, OR take up more loans and live a life with heavier debts.

      Delete
    3. A car is a luxury. Nobody needs a car in Singapore. So its not out of this world that only those who can afford it should be able to buy it.

      Delete
    4. oh yeah, car is a luxury, don't whine if you cant afford it. If you have it its a bonus.. okay, just f-off with that statement thou. If you have a family, but could not afford a car, do you want to take the congested public transport with >1 baby prams? Yes, you could but what the hell? It causes so much inconvenience for the families with children and baby prams. During weekends, it is so crowded that when you push a pram into the train people stare at you. Face it.

And I couldnt agree more with the first post. There are many other ways of reducing the cars on the road, and COE is the worst/most ineffective way.

As a 21 year old (as of this year, still 20!) I dare say that looking at a future for myself and a possible family, I don't wanna drive a car. I see my dad struggling with car issues (road tax, maintenance, petrol, etc) and I know it takes a painfully huge bite out of the breadwinner's pocket every month for a mid (?) class family (family of 4 with total earnings of less than 3k a month)

Still, SG wants to increase public transport prices :( but it doesn't beat the amount to spend on a car!

    Cheers for a great article.

  43. It's sad you had a bad experience "owning" a car! And you missed out on all the advantages of having a car in Singapore.

The idea here is time (and convenience!) = money. I'm sure most people who buy cars, are buying time and convenience.

When I leave office at 6, I reach home (or where-ever I want to go) at 6:20 or 6:30pm.
Those who take public transport reach home at almost 8pm. One whole day gone, barely enough time to cook dinner, or enjoy a slow meal, or spend time with family.

Jams? Isn't that a same problem faced with public transport too?
Human jams on the MRT, missing countless of MRTs because each one is too full to enter. I believe this is the same with buses.
Sure cars break down too, but definitely NOT as often as the MRT and possibly never if you service your car well.

Hungry at 2am? Simply drive to the nearest 24 hours eatery (plenty in Singapore).

Or even out till 2am? The car is waiting for you at the carpark that's within a few steps.
What is scouring for a nightrider bus which (I think) doesn't operate till the first morning bus arrives?

Plus, you don't have to ever worry when the night ends and keep looking at your watch and telling your friends "Hey I need to leave at 11:59pm to catch the last bus"

And ANYWHERE in Sg is accessible to you without even having to think, which bus goes there. And if you go somewhere isolated from the main road, you won't have to worry about how you are going to walk all the way out just to flag a cab.

I do hope your next experience of "owning" or really owning a car will be more pleasant than this! :)

  46. Totally enjoyed the sarcasm! I'm from Brunei and as a frequent traveller to Singapore, so I have heard often about car ownership from taxi drivers and also friends there. I must say, I don't think I could own a car there, the COE alone is scary. I guess we're lucky here to be able to pay for a 1.6-litre car for about $26K and a litre of oil is cheaper than a bottle of water. But despite that, I'd rather that we have proper public transport like Singapore has.

Side-note: That Kenari Perodua is about $15K here.
